BEHIND THE GLITZ & GLAMOUR

WORDS BY NFC STUDENT ALICIA PORTER

As a fashion enthusiast and a student of NFC, we are often given opportunities to immerse ourselves in the world of high fashion, events, and to live out our ‘Devil wears Prada’ dream. Recently, a group of NFC students, including me, had the incredible opportunity to assist at a renowned Vogue event, VOGUE Australia Fashion Night Out. We were given the chance to step behind the scenes helping to dress the models, and mastering the quick change. In this blog post, I will take you on a journey behind the glamour, sharing the invaluable experiences and lessons gained from this incredible adventure.

The Road to Vogue

Every fashion student dreams of a chance to work with Vogue, and being invited to assist at a Vogue event is a dream come true. It all began with a connection made by our college's amazing Communications Team, which has demonstrated to our students the importance of networking and seizing opportunities in the fashion world, you never know who you’ll run in to!

The Day of the Event

The hustle and bustle of makeup artists, hairstylists, Vogue team, and models, was awe-inspiring. As we entered the backstage area on Pitt Street, we were immediately immersed in the whirlwind of preparation, steaming and communications with the head team. Our team was assigned to work on styling the models, mastering the quick change between each look, ensuring every detail was impeccable and up to standards of the runway.

Attention to Detail is Everything

Working with numerous models and high-end fashion pieces demanded an immense attention to detail, and a very, VERY, quick pace. We learned that every button, zipper, and seam had to be perfect before the model went out, and every accessory was chosen to fit perfectly for the look in question. This experience reiterated the importance of precision in fashion. Small details can make a significant impact on the overall look, and a single flaw can disrupt the harmony of an outfit, sometimes leading to bad press.

The Art of Adapting to Pressure

The world of fashion is fast-paced and filled with pressure. At the Vogue event, we were working against the clock to ensure the models were styled and ready for the runway, with extremely quick turn arounds. This experience taught us the art of staying focused under pressure, and not taking too much onto your plate, a skill that is vital for a successful career in fashion, especially styling and backstage preparation.

A Dream Come True

Assisting at a Vogue event and styling models was a dream come true for all of the NFC student volunteers, and it's a testament to the endless possibilities that lie ahead in the world of fashion through NFC. This experience reinforced many of our passions for the industry and provided invaluable lessons and memories that will guide us on our journey. It's a reminder that with determination, networking, and a love for fashion, anyone can find their place in the dazzling world of luxury couture through NFC.

I, and many other students are immensely grateful to NFC for opening this door for us, and continuing to aid us in networking, and I can't wait to continue my journey in the world of fashion.
