LEARN FROM FASHION EXPERTS LIKE RIA KAMAT SHETTY AT NFC’S WEEKLY NETWORKING EVENTS
WORDS BY NFC STUDENT RAANYA RAM
When I joined NFC, I was greeted with the influential experience of Networking Events occurring every Thursday afternoon. Heading into my classes every Thursday morning, I look forward to each and every upcoming guest speaker who works dedicatedly within the Fashion Industry. The opportunity to learn about their insider perspectives and the hard work they’ve put into achieving the roles that they have, has been nothing short of inspiring. Whilst speaking about all the glitz and glamour they’ve experienced, each guest speaker also discusses the raw processes of creativity and understanding that the Fashion Industry requires. Throughout the afternoon sessions I began to question myself; how can I bring my unique perspective to the forefront and expand my own professional network?
The guest speaker Ria Kamat Shetty, an inspiring stylist and creative consultant across Vogue, Aje and many more brands, really struck me with her professional insights and wonderful ability to expand her brand as a stylist to creative consultant. The vast opportunities she accepted in London, India and Australia shaped the unique vision she brings to set, diversifying her identity, branding her as the creative success she is!
Being of Indian descent myself, her interest in the craftsmanship and the aesthetic features of materials and clothing through her experience in Vogue India, quickly appointed her as one of my favourite Networking Events to date! The intensive knowledge she shared behind creating a look, where showcasing your nostalgic experiences as well as celebrating your culture and who you are, is the integral key to creation was extremely valuable for me.
“Aesthetic comes from a place within but nonetheless, it’s not something that can’t be taught.”
This quote was my key takeaway from the event, illustrating how my own creative process derives from the experiences I’ve lived, but can also be integrated with the knowledge and understanding I recieve through my schooling with NFC. I love the the concept that working with fashion introduces the ability to adapt to an identity whilst also simultaneously creating work to be a part of that identity. This opportunity to connect with industry experts through Networking Events has built memorable and meaningful relationships for me, I can’t wait to see the roster of guests for next term!
