LIFE AS A NEWBY NFC STUDENT
WORDS BY NFC STUDENT BANI NARULA
For many, 2024 would be the year of change, new experiences, jumping into new opportunities head first. For me, it was exactly that. Being a girl who has always had a straight path from finishing my Psychology degree and getting straight into work, has definitely shown me that we are still so young and if you need to be exposed to several paths to find the right one, then thats what you need to get DONE.
I have always taken choices in life that have deemed to meet the normal standards of a girl born and raised in the heart of Sydney. Go to school, go to uni, get a 9-5, and climb the ladder of success. Having been in the exact position, I felt deflated, burnout, excited.. But, bored and doodling on the side with exploding fashion design ideas. The question “of what else is my purpose in this amazing world” always followed me.
As 2024 has rolled around in a heartbeat, I took the biggest leap of faith YET and resigned from my corporate role to fully commit to my biggest and deepest desire to live and breathe in the creative world. And hey, if it isnt meant to be.. It is what it is... but, let me tell you something.. Having discovered NFC, there has been nothing short of the most amazing opportunities straight off the bat, amazing connections and exposure to course work that you probably wont get anywhere else. I mean this stuff is literally curated by a group of well known experts working in the fields of PR, Communications, Styling and Fashion from the most renowned companies.
I was given the opportunity to meet with Bryce (the legendary director of NFC), in less than a week of putting in an application!! and boy was I in awe. Never have I seen such a campus that quite literally made my brain ooz creative ideas from one foot in the door. The way the colours compliment each other, the thought out designer books, the photoshoot studio that is accessible to ALL student at any time, oh and there was a candy bar.. Yes guilty. We had an amazing and informative chat of my current situation, where I see myself in the future, what NFC can help me achieve, whilst also giving me a thorough nsight of past student achievements and the crazy experiences they encountered aloing the way. Crazy in a good way. I am not joking when I say I got in my car called my mum and was on my way back to the orientation a couple hours later.
I wasn't mad about coming to the campus twice in one day. Its quite literally an art piece. In one day I met Bryce, enrolled over the phone, came to orientation, and found the people that resinated with me the most. Orientation was a great way to ha ha.. Get some amazing goodies, but seriously, meet some of the coolest gals in the game (who are now in my class and I learn from them every week) and get a really good understanding of what the year ahead is going to be like. JAM PACKED, but wow the thrill of knowing what's to come is giving me goose bumps just writing this right now.
I, since enrolling little over a week ago, have been so lucky to get multiple internship opportunities already as well as, help last years student graduate. Last week on a 36 degree day the team and I set off to one of the most funkiest joints in sydney summer The Glass Island, to set up the ‘2023 Graduate Ceremony’. It gave me another glimpse of what to expect at the finish line!!! We set out a bunch of goodies that NFC had partnered with, sunnies, sunscreen, hats and much more (the paper fans were much much needed great investment). But, by doing this I was able to meet some other girls from different classes and make some new connections which was in itself, so fun.
Here I am now, a week into the course and yes dont get me wrong I did and still do really enjoy my psychology background, may even go back to it one day. But for now, I can confidently say that class this week has been so so fun, an insanely engaging teaching style, group work activities and some really funky visuals that has engraved the week 1 info into my soul.
I can't really say that NFC is for you. I feel like you’d have to come and witness what I mean for you to really understand this perspective. OR ... you can go on NFC TikTok and Instagram, it really does pop off with real time live engagement.
Overall, I have not questioned any of my choices so far into the year. NFC has given me no reason.. but only to look at life in a more creative macro way. Having been given a glimpse of the opportunities that are out there makes my arm hair stand! If you are like me reading this right now, stuck in your 9-5 scared to leave, unsure where to go to next and, your imagination runs crazy in the creative space!
