MOVING TO SYDNEY TO STUDY FASHION BUSINESS
WORDS BY NFC STUDENT EMILY AVERN
In mid-July 2023, with just five months left before completing my BA in Communications and Media Studies at the University of Western Australia, I found myself overwhelmed by the looming question, "What will you do next?" from relatives and friends. I was certain about wanting a career in media and marketing, but unsure about the specific industry. Then it dawned on me – I could combine my skills in media and marketing with my passion for fashion!
I conducted extensive research, visiting international campuses during holidays. Being based in Perth, there weren't any local colleges that particularly appealed to me, as most fashion lovers typically move interstate within Australia. After numerous Zoom interviews with institutions and colleges worldwide, I narrowed down my favourites to an institution in Italy and the National Fashion College (NFC). After several emails and calls with Bryce, the Founder and Director of NFC, I knew NFC was the right choice for me.
Before enrolling, NFC demonstrated a genuine interest in my future fashion career aspirations and how they could help me achieve these goals. A much more personal approach to what any other institution was presenting. Then, during my first week at the college, I began my first internship with Capri Holdings, fulfilling a 2024 career bucket list item - working with Versace. This massive opportunity wouldn't have been possible without NFC and their networks.
Within just four weeks at NFC, I've made wonderful friends, worked at some of my all-time favourite companies including Dior, participated in the Melbourne Fashion Festival, and secured the opportunity to work at New York Fashion Week in September 2024.
NFC's weekly special guest speakers, from the marketing, business, and public relations sectors of the fashion industry, and exclusive college trips (like the Melbourne Fashion Festival), have provided me with invaluable networking opportunities and firsthand industry experience.
I can't recommend NFC enough!
While moving from Perth to Sydney was a significant personal shift, I've been able to fully immerse myself in my career. The team at NFC has been incredibly supportive throughout this transition. I always look forward to attending my weekly class and I always leave feeling inspired. This is not just due to our excellent teachers and mentors who are always accessible, but also the like-minded students around me.
We all motivate and support one another, making for a very positive environment for which I am so grateful for!
