STYLING SESSION WITH EMMA READ

WORDS BY NFC STUDENT, ALICIA PORTER

NFC has once again provided students, and also members of the public, with the incredible opportunity to learn alongside the fantastic Emma Read, a renowned stylist who worked with huge fashion brands such as Tiffany and Co, ELLE Magazine and David Jones.

With Emma working as both in-house, and a Freelance Stylist, she had lots to teach us about building our experience as a Stylist, but also giving us expert advice on how to branch off as a freelancer, and make yourself well known in the wide world of fashion.

This event not only provided a session for current students to enhance our skills but also embraced a sense of creativity and innovation within future fashion enthusiasts.

WHAT WE COVERED

The workshop took place at National Fashion College and the space had been transformed into a heaven for fashion experimentation, with racks of new clothing pieces, accessory tables, and ring lights scattered around the various rooms.

The atmosphere was incredibly motivating, as we all sat and listened to the expertise of Emma at the start of the workshop. She covered the 101 of Styling, explaining everything from shoe taping, to understanding different body shapes. We created mood boards for magazine spreads, helping us to visualise the creative process that goes on behind the scenes whilst preparing for a shoot, and Emma taught us her personal method to brief the team, or individual she is working with.

We then moved on to a hands-on activity, where Emma gave us a character from Euphoria, to which we had to style an actor/actress for the premiere screening of the series. It was really insightful to see everyones creative process come through within this task, as well as people’s personal styles creeping through their work.

We were able to use the incredible styling wardrobe that NFC has on display for all the students to access, which is overflowing in patterns, textures and styles, making the task really interesting to take part in, as we were exposed to a lot of different creative outlooks from all of the students.

After this, Emma allowed us to take complete creative control, and style ourselves in a streetwear look, with the incredible addition of Wesley Tan, who took all of the professional pictures on the day.

Each look was crafted perfectly to portray the student’s individual style, and it was truly inspiring to see each student's vision come to life. We dug through the NFC Styling wardrobe, including using different accessories and pieces to navigate our final look, and Wesley took some incredible pictures to finish the day off.

The lesson with Emma was a great step into the National Fashion College world for incoming students, and a very inspiring day for the rest of us, and I left feeling very inspired, motivated and knowledgeable about the wider world of fashion.
