NETWORKING EVENT: MY TAKEAWAY’S
WORDS BY NFC STUDENT, ISABEL JIANG
When I applied to NFC, I was specifically looking to join the Thursday afternoon class because of the Networking Events that would be held after. Since my very first class in February, I’ve made it a point never to miss a single networking event — and for good reason. There’s nothing quite like the excitement of receiving our virtual invitation and the lively buzz of conversation as we await the arrival of our guest speaker. Each event brings us students closer to the realities of the industry. Not only do the guests share their valuable insights, but they also provide new opportunities for expanding our professional network. After these engaging one-hour sessions, we often leave with not only the benefit of their experience but also the potential for new industry connections.
One of my favourite networking events was with Tiffany Farrington; Founder and Director of The Social Diary, a platform that delivers industry news to those within the industry. Tiffany shared the fascinating origin story of The Social Diary, which initially began as a simple calendar designed to coordinate brand events and prevent scheduling conflicts. This cooperation is still a core principle of The Social Diary. Instead of fostering competition, it promoted camaraderie within the Australian fashion scene. This shift in approach helped transform the industry’s fundamental dynamics, encouraging collaboration and unity among brands which; this is a message that has lingered with me after Tiffany’s talk.
Personally, I thought this was such a heartwarming cause, in such stark contrast to how the media typically depicts the fashion industry and how others assume it to be. It was also so exciting to learn about and hear from such an integral perspective from the industry. It felt like we were at the core of the industry rather than just students. I say this in the best way possible, it almost normalised the fantasy of the fashion industry. This experience made our dreams feel much more accessible and tangible. Tiffany’s insights helped bridge the gap between aspiration and reality, showing that the industry is not only within reach but also a place where collaboration and support are valued. It was incredibly reassuring and inspiring to see this environment I may soon be part of.
Tiffany’s presentation was not only educational and motivational but also infused with a genuine warmth that resonated deeply with us. She effectively dismantled the traditional barriers between industry professionals and students, engaging with us on a level of equality that was both respectful and empowering. This created a unique and valuable sense of connection, emphasising the true purpose of networking events. It highlighted how these gatherings are more than just opportunities to listen to guest speakers; they are platforms for building meaningful relationships and fostering connections.
The atmosphere Tiffany created at the event exemplified the ideal conditions for impactful networking. Her effort to connect with us on a personal level showcased the essence of networking events as spaces for genuine interaction and relationship-building. This made the experience special and memorable, underscoring the importance of such events in creating lasting, meaningful connections within the industry.
