NFC’S COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

WORDS BY SOCIAL MEDIA & COMMUNITY ASSISTANT, LUKE GRAHAM

As a young queer person, simply existing in many spaces can be cause for discomfort, unwelcome feelings and a perpetual sense of simply not belonging. We constantly adapt and evolve in the hopes of averting judgemental eyes, adjusting behaviours, and desperately seeking out any semblance of mutual recognition or similarity in the communities that surround us. Personally, I had resigned myself to a lifetime of this, fully subscribing to the status quo and suppressing aspects of my individuality in order to live free of negative attention and unsolicited critique.

It is rare to find a place that encourages pure expression; a place that opens its doors to the world, attracting individuals with shared passions, dreams, and experiences. Walking onto campus for the first time, the interminable and familiar collective of dark, anxious thoughts began to creep their way in to the front of my mind, manifesting worry and uncertainty that I would soon discover to be wholly unnecessary. There is an atmosphere at NFC, a contagious sense of belonging that radiates and spreads from student to student, made possible through the wide representation of backgrounds, creeds, beliefs and ideas that mingle within the college itself.

At NFC, diversity and inclusion are not just buzzwords; they are core values that guide everything we do. We believe that everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, appearance, religion or beliefs deserves to feel safe, respected, and valued. The college’s commitment to fostering an inclusive environment is evident in every aspect of campus life, from our anti-discrimination policies to our vibrant community events.

During my time here, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of diversity and inclusion. The college offers a range of resources to ensure that every student feels included and heard. From individualised engagement with staff, dedicated safe spaces, and a longstanding commitment to education and understanding, NFC provides a robust safety net for its students. On a foundational level, the college strives to facilitate and promote understanding and empathy within the community, further strengthening our collective bond.

In recognition of the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), NFC hosts a variety of events aimed at celebrating diversity and raising awareness about the issues that affect our students. Annually, our community gathers on campus to celebrate Pride, with Drag performances, a custom Makeup station and queer music; whilst providing an exciting and enjoyable event, often this experience can be the first time a student feels comfortable enough to express themselves freely within a community of peers that embrace and encourage difference. This event not only highlights the college’s unwavering support for the LGBTQ+ community but also provides opportunities for students to engage, learn, and advocate for inclusivity.

The sense of belonging I have found at NFC is unparalleled. It is a place where individuality is celebrated, and students are encouraged to express themselves freely without fear of judgment. The friendships and connections I have made here are deeply rooted in mutual respect and shared experiences. Together, we strive to create a community where everyone can thrive and be their authentic selves; to now work alongside the team that facilitated this environment, is something I proudly cherish and hope to provide for those following in my footsteps.

As we commemorate IDAHOBIT, I am reminded of the importance of standing together against discrimination and embracing the rich diversity that defines us. At NFC, we are more than just a college; we are a family that champions equality, acceptance, and love. So, to all current and future students, I invite you to join us in this journey of empowerment and inclusion. Together, we can continue to make NFC a beacon of hope and a haven of acceptance for all.
