TIPS FOR INTERNSHIP SUCCESS!
WORDS BY NFC STUDENT, RUBY MACKENZIE
Starting a new internship can be equally exciting and daunting. So here’s some tips from one NFC student to another.
First off, be yourself. I know it sounds cheesy but employers can tell when someone is authentic or if they are trying too hard. In the long run, it will suit you to just be comfortable and not stress about what they might expect you to be. This goes without saying, but treat others how you want to be treated. You don’t want to create a bad experience for the person training you or create a bad reputation for yourself before you even get started in the industry.
Dress to impress, both physically and mentally. While it's not a runway show, dress professionally and comfortably. If they have certain requirements for you to meet, dress wise, ensure you follow it. If you are uncertain, ask NFC!
If you’re totally unsure what to wear, just put on something simple.
A plain neutral coloured tee
A simple button up which you can pair with a plain singlet underneath
Your favourite pair of jeans
If you purchased an NFC crew t-shirt, wear that!
In my experience at internships, over the first few weeks you will start to understand what vibe everyone dresses in, whether it be more casual or business-attire, which can help you feel more at ease with your own outfit choices.
Make connections. Talk to everyone at the company that you can. If you get a lunch break, have your lunch with everyone else in the kitchen. If you are working alongside someone at a desk, ask them questions about how they got to where they are (as long as they aren't too busy of course). Internships aren't just something to add to your resume, they are a learning experience and a means of connection in the fashion world.
Interviewing or trialling an internship can be nerve racking but don't let that get the better of you. Keep in mind you must remain confident and authentic. Make sure you do your research about the brand before coming face-to-face with one of their representatives because more likely than not, they will ask you about your experience in this field and your thoughts on the brand. It’s super important to let the interviewer know what you have learnt so far, your practical experience and what you are interested in doing.
Don't be shy. Take full advantage of this amazing opportunity and get involved. It may not be exactly the career you see yourself in, but every step is a step forward. Just remember this is a part of your journey, not your destination.
Most importantly, remember that all these people have been in the same position as you once in their life and they will probably be forgiving of any confusion or questions you have. Good luck. I know you can do it!
