SPINNING AROUND THE FASHION INDUSTRY WITH NFC

-Words by NFC Student Harriet Mills

From mannequins to Manolo’s, and mentors, the world of fashion has my heart, J’Adore.

Starting at an early age, my mum’s clothes were my first introduction to the world of sequins, shift dresses and shoes that weren’t quite my size. Stepping inside the Vogue wardrobe on my first day, surrounded by magazines, rails of designer clothes as well as shoes that were in fact my size, was a dream come true. A few Tuesdays later, whilst assisting on my first Vogue Australia shoot, I quietly watched as editors began to curate and style the images I have admired for many years, a moment of storytelling I will always remember.

My reintroduction to the world of sequins came up 3 flights of stairs to a brand I have followed since their Vovo, mushroom and oyster show days - Romance Was Born. Swathed by sequins, ruffles, neon colours, patchwork, and experimental textiles, I knew I was in space of pure imagination and what a pleasure and privilege it is to watch Anna and Luke work their magic.

Between my roles at Vogue and RWB, National Fashion College is sprinkling new seeds of hope, opportunity, and adventure. I assisted backstage at the Carla Zampatti show, waiting for those molten moments and assisted the styling team for the Qantas 100th Anniversary event which featured Aussie Pop royalty, Kylie Minogue for a surprise performance. I am, in fact, still spinning around after this silver sequined, glistening purple jumpsuit and Louboutin moment.

Bryce has created such a welcoming and inspiring place to study, form friendships and receive mentorship, I feel very lucky to be a part of the NFC Crew and I can’t wait to see where the next three terms take me.

x. Harriet
